One of the biggest challenges facing ports in the world is streamlining the logistics chain, releasing goods after unloading and transporting them - preferably as quickly as possible - to the destination.

What is perhaps less well known, however, is that the goods arriving at the ports, are only at the first stop on its long journey to the logistics centers, the businesses - and ultimately, in most cases, to our homes.

The State of Israel is an island country with 99% of its trade coming through seaports.

Only recently, two new ports were opened in Israel, the southern port of Ashdod and the Gulf port in Haifa, to which are added road and rail transportation projects that are part of the overall solution promoted by the Israel Ports Company to create a logistical continuum.

A new and promising project carried out by the Israel Ports Company as an executive arm of the state, dubbed the "Port Connections Project", has been launched and is also expected to address the issue of congestion.

The port connections project is part of the overall system promoted by the Israel Ports Company, to create a continuous supply chain from the ship (ie: the port) to the customer's home.

This is a project that combines green protection of the environment, securing infrastructure and relieving congestion on the roads.

As part of the project, seven bridges are being built: two bridges over Road 22, three bridges over the Kishon River, a bridge over Moshe Dayan Street and a bridge in the Haifa airport area.

The southern section, which includes four bridges connecting the Gulf port, Israel Shipyards and Kishon East to Highway 75, was recently opened to traffic.

The vision behind the project stemmed from the understanding that in order to move quickly and receive the goods on time, the inhibiting factors on the roads must be minimized: congestion, traffic lights, etc. But the speed of transport is not the only advantage that comes from this huge project NIS 1 billion. Those who already benefit and will benefit from the optimization program, is the entire port and industrial space in the Haifa Bay area and the surrounding area, as well as of course residents of Haifa and the Krayot who experience heavy loads on the roads

. Some have just launched, the road optimization plan includes the construction of an infrastructure tunnel, roads (which extend a total length of about 4.5 kilometers), and a railway under Road 22, which will serve the ports in the Gulf area and the surrounding area.

Many resources have been invested in the smart road system in order to create a continuous trip without traffic lights from the port area in Haifa to the south of the country.

In addition, many resources have also been invested in an innovative and pioneering infrastructure tunnel of its kind in Israel, along which sensors and cameras will be installed that will transmit to a control room, in order to identify rapid treatment of faults if necessary.

The tunnel, which is about two kilometers long, includes separate corridors that actually create three tunnels in which the water, sewage, electricity and communication systems will be installed, as well as transport pipes for fuels and chemicals.

Even at the beginning of the project, the Israel Ports Company put before its eyes the upgrade of the existing infrastructure and roads, along with the construction of the new transportation system.

Upgrading the existing infrastructure included widening intersections, and working in the field that allows for a smoother and better ride.

The upgrade of the infrastructure and the improvement of access to the Gulf area took place last September, and there is already a direct connection, directly from Highway 6 to the port of Haifa.

The direct connection rule in the northern part of the project is expected to be completed in about a year.

The vision behind the new road system is to eventually connect the port area in Haifa Bay with the rest of the country.

But of course the vision is not limited to the north of the country - in addition to this project, there is a project of a system of roads and bridges in the port area of Ashdod, which is also promoted and implemented by the Israel Ports Company.

According to the CEO of the Israel Ports Company, Yitzhak Blumenthal: "The port connections project in Haifa will create a direct transportation sequence without traffic lights from the Gulf area in Haifa to the rest of the country.

This sequence will contribute to shortening the schedules in the transportation of goods from and to the port and will address the logistical needs of the ports' customers, carriers and industry.

The project is part of the overall system that the Israel Ports Company is promoting to create a continuous supply chain from the ship to the customer's home, which includes investment in advanced port infrastructure, opening of new ports in the Gulf port and the southern port and development of advanced logistics centers in both Ashdod and Haifa.
