A source in the Russian gas sector announced today that all gas importers from Russia in Greece have switched to using the ruble to pay gas bills and avoid a supply interruption.
Russia Today website quoted the source as saying today: "All Greek companies that import Russian gas have switched to paying its value in rubles, according to Gazprom's terms."
The source pointed out that the deadline to pay for gas supplies for the month of April was set on the 25th of this month, and therefore the money had to be deposited in a special account on the 23rd of this month because the transfer process takes two days.
Russia's share in Greek gas imports is between 45 and 55 percent depending on the season, and this is why Greek gas import companies confirm that it will not be possible to replace Russian gas with any other sources in the coming years.
On March 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree setting out a new procedure for paying for gas supplies in rubles by buyers from unfriendly countries.
