The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has announced that China ranks first in the world in terms of the number of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) identified by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Xinhua reported that the FAO recently recognized three sites in China: an ancient tea-producing area in Anshi County, southeast China's Fujian Province, a nomadic livestock-raising district in Chifeng City, north China's Inner Mongolia Province, and a planting system for rainwater-irrigated stone terraced fields in Shehxian County, Hebei Province. In northern China, they have been designated as AHSs of global importance, bringing the total number of the country's AHSs to 18 sites.
The FAO noted that the sites have been classified as Agricultural Heritage Systems of Global Importance due to their unique ways of using traditional practices and knowledge while preserving unique biodiversity and ecosystems.
