US Nobel laureate in economics Joseph Stiglitz wants to ban the use of Bitcoin and Co.
"Close it up," Stiglitz told SPIEGEL.
A ban could start where cryptocurrencies are exchanged for regular money.
Stiglitz justified his claim with the fact that digital currencies enabled money laundering on a large scale.
»Right now there are two big holes that we need to close: cryptocurrencies and real estate.«
Work has been going on for decades to make the financial markets more transparent, according to the former chief economist at the World Bank.
"And just because it's digital doesn't change the fact that it has to be transparent." Real estate transactions are also inadequately monitored in his home country.
"The USA remains a money laundering center - and we have to take that seriously." The ex-president also stands for the problems in the real estate sector: "Donald Trump was known as a money launderer - that's how he earned his money."
