"The whole world as a location" - that's how the Federal Foreign Office advertises for applicants.

With success.

More than 1,400 people registered for the selection process for the higher foreign service in 2019/2020.

Her dream: to work as a diplomat in one of the 230 foreign missions, from Abidjan to Zagreb.

But the requirements for applicants are high.

Among other things, a university degree with a master’s degree, very good knowledge of English and another foreign language and at least basic knowledge of French are required, as well as a health test and a security check, which also includes life partners and children.

The multiple-choice test is particularly feared, in which the applicants have to answer a total of one hundred questions from different fields of knowledge under time pressure - international, European and constitutional law, economics, history and politics as well as general knowledge.

In the last selection process, 711 of the 1414 applicants were invited to take the written test.

587 finally took part – and only 315 passed.

Would you have belonged?
