World Oceans Day: "Collecting plastic on the beach is good, acting upstream so that it is no longer there is better"

2022-06-04T18:10:28.169Z

On the occasion of World Oceans Day, celebrated on June 8, Louise Arthur from the association "Du flocon à la Vague", discusses the actions to be taken on a daily basis for the seabed.

It covers nearly 70% of the surface of the earth, is home to up to 80% of all life on the planet, is populated by thousands, even millions of different species... The ocean is essential to our existence on earth and, now, to our survival.

Indeed, it absorbs almost a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions that we produce, and sucks up some of the heat.

However, we always play the ungrateful with him.

Each year, nearly 10 million tons of plastic waste disappears in its belly.

Thus for ten years, World Oceans Day, which is celebrated on June 8, aims to recall the role of the latter as a source of life.

Madame Figaro.- In what state are our oceans today?

Louise Arthur.- In poor condition (

).

We know that plastic is a scourge, but people only see the surface, that is to say only 1% of the real damage.

Among the ravages of the industrial revolution, there are also greenhouse gas emissions.

We produce too much CO2, and the oceans absorb it.

However, their plants, including algae and phytoplankton, are in overdose of carbon dioxide.

This creates a phenomenon of “ocean acidification”, with the consequences of weakening organisms.

Corals, oysters and shellfish in particular struggle to create shells, to develop, and will be more vulnerable to disease.

As for CO2, the ocean will capture the heat and generate underwater heat waves which are at the origin of the disappearance of certain species, or of their migration from south to north.

Why has it become so essential for us to protect them?

Because human beings are made of water.

We ingest it all day.

So if she is unhealthy, we will be unhealthy.

Our association tries to reach people through this prism, because beyond protecting our marine species, their ecosystem, we also protect our bodies.

As far as micro plastic is concerned, we have no hindsight but we know that it follows the course of the water.

That is to say that we will find as much in our tap water as, recently, in the snow of the Pyrenees.

But we don't know yet what disease it can develop...

On a daily basis, what are the right things to do to stop polluting the oceans?

Above all, we must try to think responsibly on a daily basis.

That is to say, ask where a product comes from and what it is made with.

Favored the sale of food in bulk, to have as little plastic waste as possible.

Also, be very careful with toxic cosmetics.

Those that we will find in supermarkets and chemicals: beauty products, cleaning products, bleach, detergent, etc... We will prefer to buy biodegradable.

The oceans are somewhat the receptacle of all pollution, you have to know what you throw in them.

We ingest it all the time.

If it is polluted, we will be unhealthy”

Why is it necessary to reduce our water consumption?

First, it is not true to say that there is less water on earth than before.

In reality, it's the same.

But there are more of us today who share it.

We must therefore be aware of the water we consume.

For some time now, the concept of "invisible water" has begun to become more democratic.

It corresponds to the water taken from nature to produce the goods of our daily life, from the beginning of its manufacture, to its mode of marketing, until its deterioration.

This applies to food, objects, clothing, cars... As such, each person consumes 4000 liters of invisible water per day.

One pair of jeans is equivalent to around 8,000 liters of water, for example.

It is therefore important to consume better, to consume less water and pollute it less afterwards.

Finally, what you are saying is that cleaning operations (collection of cigarette butts, plastics) are not enough today?

No, we have to rethink our systems.

Man has got into the habit of extracting a raw material, transforming it, consuming it and throwing it away.

Even if mentalities have been changing for several years, the big economy means that we are still in this relationship, a resource is equal to a waste.

Cleaning and collection actions are very good for recycling, but it is essential to "act at the source", to do things upstream, so that there is no more waste on the beach.

This is why your association offers comprehensive educational programs in schools...

Young people are more aware of ecological issues.

They already have eco-gestures.

Our mission is to educate, inform, plant seeds in brains that are still developing.

Children are the future.
