The income tax scale will be indexed to inflation, announces the government

The Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced that the income tax thresholds would be increased in line with inflation.

Guest of RMC-BFMTV this Wednesday morning, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, explained that France was not done with inflation.

“We are in the peak, and it will last a few more weeks or even a few months”, due, in particular, to “the war in Ukraine and the Chinese blockage”, he listed.

For him, inflation should begin to decline "early 2023".

A rather gloomy prospect, which the government intends to circumvent.

For several months, he has notably encouraged companies to raise wages.

But, according to the Minister of the Economy, it is not necessary, for all that, that "the French pay more taxes on income because of inflation", he affirmed.

This is why "we are going to index the income tax scale to inflation", announced Bruno Le Maire.

Concretely, "we are increasing the thresholds for the amount of inflation", he explained, in order to prevent people who have not paid income tax until now from starting to pay it because of this increase in wages linked to inflation, or that employees "switch to higher brackets".

"We must protect" the French from inflation, "I think it's necessary economically and it's right", hammered the minister.

New device for gasoline

Bruno Le Maire mentioned another concern, linked to inflation: the price of gasoline.

He notably recalled that the discount of 18 cents on fuel would be extended “until the end of August”.

Then "we have to get out of it gradually" because we must "avoid any brutality", assured Bruno Le Maire.

For the Minister, this will require a modification of the device.

"I don't want to hear an employee telling me that it costs too much to go to work" because of the price of petrol, so we must "think about replacing the discount system with a system that will better cover those who are forced to take the car to go to work or whose profession requires the use of the car, ”he said on RMC-BFMTV.
