The volume of freight through China's waterways increased by 4.2 percent year on year during the first five months of this year, according to official data released today.
Xinhua said that data issued by the Chinese Ministry of Transport showed that "about 3.36 billion tons of goods were transported via waterways during the mentioned period," noting that the volume of freight through waterways in May alone recorded 729.11 million tons.
Central China's Hubei Province topped the 31 provincial-level regions, increasing by 23.8 percent year on year during the period between January and May, followed by southern Hainan Province and eastern Jiangsu Province.
