In order to alleviate nationwide delivery bottlenecks for goods, the head of the Port of Hamburg has proposed suspending the Sunday driving ban for trucks.
"You could also postpone certain construction work on the railway," said Angela Titzrath of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper".
There are disruptions in the supply chains "from China to Hamburg, from Los Angeles to Rotterdam," says Titzrath, CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA).
The biggest problem in the port of Hamburg is that companies are slow to pick up their goods.
“The containers used to be at our place for a day or two.
Now it's five days and a lot longer.” Ships waited up to ten days before they were allowed to enter port.
The traffic jam was not only due to the corona pandemic and the traffic jam on the Suez Canal, said Titzrath.
Around 100,000 truck drivers from Ukraine and Belarus were also missing.
In addition, there are currently frequent failures in rail traffic due to the weather and numerous construction projects.
Freight traffic suffers from the same problems as passenger traffic - and passenger traffic has priority.
According to Titzrath, politics can help if, for example, they relax the Sunday driving ban.
It currently applies to commercial truck traffic on Sundays and public holidays from 0 a.m. to 10 p.m.
