The conflict is reminiscent of earlier debates on immigration policy: the Union warns the federal government against hiring airport staff abroad. The airport chaos must be solved with domestic employees.

The Union has called on the federal government to rely on domestic specialists instead of foreign helpers in the fight against the chaos at German airports.

"The airport chaos could be solved permanently with domestic specialists," said the transport policy spokesman for the Union parliamentary group, Thomas Bareiß (CDU), of the Düsseldorf daily newspaper "Rheinische Post".

“I call on the responsible ministers to act in this way.” In the meantime, the travel chaos is damaging Germany’s reputation abroad, Bareiß continued.

It also burdens many people "who have earned their vacation".

Fear of exploitation and dumping

At the weekend it became known that the government wants to allow the entry of hundreds of foreign helpers who are supposed to help out at the airports with baggage handling, for example.

Government circles said that a four-digit number of assistants should be brought in from Turkey.

According to the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry, special permits from German authorities are required for the deployment of around 2,000 workers.

Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil had signaled readiness for such a solution.

However, it must be ensured that any form of social dumping and exploitation is excluded, according to the SPD politician.

German airlines and many airports are currently struggling with a lack of staff.

Flights are canceled and there are long queues at airports.

Many jobs were cut during the corona pandemic, and there are currently many corona diseases.

According to a study by the German Economic Institute (IW), there is currently a shortage of around 7,200 skilled workers at German airports (the full study can be found here).
