Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Sciarto announced that his country will not discuss with the European Union the imposition of an embargo on Russian gas because this step will destroy its economy.
"The Hungarian government does not even intend to discuss with other countries the possibility of imposing a ban on Russian gas supplies because this would destroy its economy," TASS news agency quoted Ciarto, who is taking part in the meeting of the European Union for Transport, Communications and Energy in Luxembourg, as saying in a Facebook post. He referred to the issue of establishing joint sites to purchase gas in the European Union, which was scheduled to be discussed at the Luxembourg meeting.
"We have no problem if the European Union is looking for new sources of gas, but participation in this should be voluntary and member states should not be subject to any commitment regarding purchases," Siarto said, explaining that the significant decrease in Russian gas supplies to Europe was due to problems. Serious technicality in Nord Stream pipeline equipment that arose due to Western sanctions.
