Airport strikes: less severe disruption than expected for this weekend of major departures

2022-07-07T15:11:49.952Z

Firefighters from the Aéroports de Paris (ADP) group have lifted their strike notice for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Others

Vacationers, ready to take off on this first major weekend of departures, can take a breather.

Firefighters from the Aéroports de Paris (ADP) group, essential for securing the runways, lifted, on Thursday, the strike notice they had filed for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

After more than a week of arm wrestling, they accepted management's latest proposal, this Wednesday evening, with "the passage of a step for everyone and a bonus of 200 euros gross, among others", summarizes Fabrice Michaud, General Secretary of CGT Transport.

As for the other employees of the group, the management granted a general increase of 3%.

It is in addition to the “unilateral measures” decided on Monday by management, which provide that all employees will return to their 2019 salary level from July 1.

They had agreed to lower them by 5% as part of the so-called “Pact” measures (work contract adaptation plan) last summer.

The employees will speak, this Friday morning at the General Assembly, on whether or not to lift the notice.

No flight cancellations to be expected at Roissy or Orly

Whatever they choose, there will be no flight cancellations, like during the social movement last week.

“In view of the elements transmitted by ADP, we will not ask the companies to reduce their flight program, we indicate to the general direction of civil aviation (DGAC).

The tracks and boarding are able to be secured.

“A new mess at Roissy Charles de Gaulle and to a lesser extent at Orly, is therefore avoided.

“We are generally satisfied with what we have been able to obtain, even if all our demands have not been satisfied, advances Fabrice Michaud, secretary general of CGT Transports.

It is a good point of support.

We will return to the charge at the start of the school year, in September.

A “non-aggression pact”, in the words of the trade unionist, was sealed between the management and the unions.

In any case on the question of salary.

“Other strike calls could be made during the summer on other subjects,” warns Fabrice Michaud, for whom the problems of understaffing have not been resolved.

Despite this exit from the crisis, a few clouds are still floating above the slopes.

First, a strike by EasyJet and Ryanair cabin crew in Spain should lead to around ten flight cancellations this weekend departing from and arriving at French airports.

Added to this are the endless queues that travelers will encounter throughout the summer, which can cause delays, due to understaffing, among security officers, baggage handlers or border police.

“Whether we are on strike or not, this point does not change, supports Rachid Eddaidj.

Of the 4,500 vacancies, barely half have been recruited.

Unions of subcontracting companies continue to fight

Above all, the unions of subcontracting companies, on strike last weekend, continue to scrap to obtain, too, wage increases.

They maintain their strike notice for the days of July 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

“Our directions continue to turn a deaf ear.

With or without our colleagues from ADP, we will create a mess if we mobilize, warns Nicolas Pereira, CGT union representative.

To ensure a good start on vacation for the French, they have every interest in listening to us.

The management of ADP must receive in the next few hours the companies concerned and the representatives of employees to try to find a way out of the crisis.

And avoid, once and for all, a black summer in its airports.
