Roissy airport: what to do if your luggage is lost?

2022-07-08T14:36:40.248Z

About 20,000 pieces of luggage have not yet found their owner at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulles airport, after a major mishap swept it away.

The employees of the Paris airport voted this Friday to lift their strike notice.

But the Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle teams are not yet at the end of their troubles.

Of the 35,000 bags blocked at the airport since last weekend due to a computer problem, only 15,000 have been returned to their owners.

The Minister of Transport hopes to return the vast majority within 5 to 7 days, as he indicated this Friday.

Are you concerned?

Here is everything you need to know to try to recover your suitcase.

Who is responsible ?

In the event of loss of baggage during the flight, the carrier is responsible for your property.

You must report it at the counter of the latter or sometimes on its website.

The company will then launch a search for your luggage and will keep you informed of its results.

If the baggage is found, the company can offer to deliver it to you at the address mentioned in the complaint, if this is provided for, for example, in its general conditions of sale or carriage.

What to do in case of loss of luggage?

If the baggage is not returned within 21 days, it is considered lost.

The traveler must file a written claim of "baggage irregularity" with the company, accompanied by a letter of inventory detailing the damage by evaluating it.

The period depends on the international regulations that apply and runs from the date the baggage should have arrived.

Depending on the country, the Montreal or Warsaw Convention is effective.

Depending on the case, a claim must be made within a maximum period of 21 days if the Warsaw Convention applies and 14 days if the Montreal Convention takes precedence.

Generally, the appropriate regulations are indicated on the plane ticket.

If it is not, just contact the airline to find out.

Compensation is granted within the limit of a ceiling of around 1,200 euros per passenger.

Airlines do not reimburse lost personal effects on the basis of their new value, but often apply a discount.

You must attach to your claim to the airline the invoices for the purchase of the lost goods.

If you do not have supporting documents, compensation for the weight may be offered to you (about 20 euros per kg).

What recourse in case of delay?

If you had to buy basic necessities (hygiene products, underwear, etc.) following a delay in returning your baggage, you can also request a refund from the airline on presentation of the invoices. .

You have 21 days from the date your suitcase is made available to make a request in writing to the carrier.

In the absence of a written complaint within this period, any action against the company is inadmissible.

What if the baggage is damaged?

It is possible to ask the airline to reimburse the price of damaged baggage and damaged goods.

For this you must write to him, within seven days of receipt of the bag in the case of a country signatory to the Montreal Convention or three days, if the Warsaw Convention applies.

To ensure that you obtain the fairest amount, it is strongly recommended to provide as much information as possible concerning goods damaged during transport (photographs, purchase invoices, etc.).

The traveler has a period of two years from the discovery of the damage to bring an action for liability against the company before a court.
