The inversion of the fuel curve, it may be now.

For the past month, the prices displayed at the pump have been falling steadily, to the point of falling below the 2 euro per liter mark.

Diesel fuel, still and still the most consumed fuel in France, cost an average of 1.99 euros last week according to figures published on Monday by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, down 7 cents over seven days.

Same trend for the SP95-E10, the best-selling gasoline in France: the liter was at 1.98 euros (-5 cents).

This decline is mechanical, it follows the marked decline in the price of oil.

This Monday, the barrel of Brent, which is a reference in Europe, was around 103 dollars (99 euros), or about 15% less over a month.

"Oil is falling because everyone expects a slowdown in consumption due to fears of stagnation or even economic decline in the world," explains Philippe Chalin, economist specializing in energy issues.

And it must be recognized that large retailers have made efforts to quickly pass on this trend to prices at the pump.

The euro/dollar parity weighs at the pump

What hope to spend a summer vacation without breaking the bank at the gas station?

Not so fast.

Firstly because the price of fuel is also linked to the euro/dollar parity.

Indeed, oil is necessarily bought and sold in dollars.

But at the moment, the European currency is at its lowest against the American currency.

It therefore takes more euros to buy a barrel.

Another reason that calls for caution: the refining margins of oil tankers remain high, because of their difficulties in doing without Russian hydrocarbons.

On the road this summer, motorists will continue to benefit from the government rebate.

The discount of 18 cents per liter purchased is maintained, it will drop to 12 cents in October then to 6 cents in November before disappearing on 1 December.
