Manutan Second Life: the Manutan group is transforming to implement the circular economy at the heart of its business model

2022-07-13T09:14:38.938Z

According to the UN, 53.6 million tonnes of electronic waste were produced worldwide in 2019. If the current economic model does not change, it will be 80 million tonnes in 2030. These staggering figures alert us to the need to fight waste and...

Organize a material sobriety that has become necessary

We are now facing a major issue: that of the management of used products, often hastily considered as waste.

Plastics end up in the oceans, products buried underground pollute the soil, those prey to planned obsolescence accumulate at the bottom of our shelves...

Thus, the place given to these products at the end of their first life cycle is essential, both for the environment and for industrial production chains.

It is absolutely necessary to prioritize reuse (donation, reconditioning, repair) over recycling whenever possible.

It is indeed the most ecological solution (with less CO2 emissions), the most social (thanks to jobs that cannot be relocated) and the most economical (residual resale value creating a business model).

If we take the example of electronic products, the scarcity of certain earths and minerals useful for their design, geopolitical hazards, as well as their monopoly of ownership by certain countries such as China, force us to rethink our supply chain and our value chain.

The good news is that the circular economy, which helps protect the environment from obsolete products while limiting the consumption of new natural resources, is turning out to be a real opportunity for companies.

And the Manutan group has made it its priesthood!

Manutan acquires ZACK to lead its customers towards the circular economy: this is the genesis of Manutan Second Life

In 2016, Pierre-Emmanuel Saint-Esprit and Timothée Mével, met on the benches of the University of Berkeley, founded the startup Zack, whose main mission is to fight against electronic waste.

For its part, the Manutan group, the largest European supplier of products and services to companies, from office supplies to IT equipment and fittings, shares the same values as Zack and an equally ardent desire to promote the circular economy.

The takeover of ZACK in February 2022 gave life to Manutan Second Life, i.e. the launch of a set of circular economy services in Europe for Manutan group customers.

By joining their forces and their resources, the experts in the upgrading of electronic products and the B2B e-commerce leader in Europe aim, initially, to upgrade new categories of products (furniture, professional equipment, etc.) and thus, to give a new dimension to the circular economy in France and in Europe.

In a second step, it is a whole transformation of our economic model towards an economy of functionality which is envisaged, with the launch of numerous repair or rental services.

Manutan Second Life: working towards sustainable product management in B2B

Today, Manutan Second Life already supports companies wishing to upgrade all of their IT equipment, by offering them a turnkey solution, from collection to the establishment of a CSR assessment of the operation.

A simple, effective and responsible way to optimize the management and end of life of their products.

The group

“ensures a second life for all the products collected, either by resale, by finding local markets on which the products have value, or by repair, but also by donating to associations, and finally recycling. which for us is the last of the solutions”

, explains its new director Pierre-Emmanuel Saint-Esprit.

With a product revaluation rate of nearly 45% today, Manutan Second Life has enabled its customers to avoid the emission of 1,446 tonnes of CO2 since January 2022, to earn money on resale, to have a positive CSR balance sheet and contribute more to the circular economy!

In addition, the group is also committed to a social approach by surrounding itself with partner associations to take care of the collection and sorting of products, such as Ateliers sans Frontières, which works for professional reintegration.
