(S+) Shortage of skilled workers: Why is there a lack of staff everywhere? (podcast)

2022-07-27T04:07:37.709Z

Whether it's a swimming pool without a lifeguard or a country inn without a cook: more and more companies in Germany can no longer find staff. How could it come to this? And what helps against that?

Two ambulances have to remain unmanned today - Thomas Kirstein guides through the station in Berlin-Mitte, from where paramedics and firefighters start their operation.

The colleagues are overloaded, the assignments are increasing.

New staff is now absolutely necessary so that emergency care can continue to be guaranteed at all.

The fire brigade in Berlin needs 500 new people per year.

"It's an enormous challenge," says Kirstein.

There are also no employees a few kilometers further towards the outskirts of the city.

Nicole Schössow, owner of the Landgasthof zum Mühlenteich, leads into the kitchen.

“There are two employees here that we miss, and where you actually feel it.

If there are also failures due to Corona, we have to limit the kitchen times during the week,” she says.

And she is not alone: According to the German Hotel and Restaurant Association, around 80 percent of catering establishments are struggling with staff shortages.

There are also problems in Peiting, Bavaria, because there is a lack of staff: not at the oven, but at the edge of the pool: the local outdoor pool has to remain closed for the first time in 47 years.

The reason: There were simply not enough lifeguards to operate.

In this episode of SPIEGEL Daily you will hear why many industries are struggling to find staff.

And SPIEGEL editor Florian Diekmann explains how these problems can be solved in the future.
