During the follow-up to its meetings, the support team at the Ministry of Industry discussed the launch of the agro-food industrialization project to be approved by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization “UNIDO” with representatives of the organization, the General Organization for Food Industries and representatives of the food private sector from the Damascus Chamber of Industry and its countryside, the mechanisms, steps and goal of the project.

And the official of industrial development in the organization, Alexey Savrasov, indicated that the project mainly targets the agricultural industrial sector to revive it, pointing out that a comprehensive survey will be carried out for institutions and companies from the public and private sectors to identify the needs of the required expertise and to know the products that have priority in export and what products help in filling Gaps and the possibility of exporting them.

Savrasov pointed out the need to identify the problems facing the food industry sector, as some companies will be visited to get a general idea of ​​their reality and the problems they face, and to conduct a general study of the markets to see the extent of expansion of products.

Project coordinator Firas Ghanem explained that the first phase of the project relates to policies and recommendations for the development of this sector and the identification of points that need to be addressed and areas that require improvement and development, while the second phase comes after taking an initial idea of ​​the supporting institutions with the aim of identifying the extent of the need to replace a specific type or to improve an area or the need for laboratories.

According to Ghanem, the third stage is an intervention model in which the most needed areas of companies are selected, action plans are prepared around them and implemented according to the available budgets, the product and shape are evaluated by specialists, and the status of production lines is studied to find out the need for products to be exported.

As for the last stage, it is based on the project and the lessons learned through direct contact with companies and institutions, and then working on a program to expand the project and obtaining more funding to cover larger areas later.

For his part, Deputy Minister of Industry Ayman Khoury indicated that the importance of the project lies in the benefit it brings to the citizen, which is a main goal for him, calling for benefiting from the flexibility of the private sector in terms of securing spare parts and production requirements and modernizing its transactions.

The Director of the General Organization for Food Industries, Ibrahim Nasra, gave a presentation on the Food Corporation and its companies, and noted that the food basket in Syria is wide, but it suffers from difficulties that hinder the progress of work, most notably the lack of cadres, the lack of raw materials and the difficulty of securing them, stressing the need to develop products and open new markets.

The head of the food sector in the Chamber of Industry in Damascus and its countryside, Talal Qala Ji, indicated that it is easy to conduct the necessary studies to work on launching the project, due to the presence of 13 committees in the chamber representing the entire food sector, indicating the possibility of the private sector to provide the necessary assistance in marketing goods and opening internal and external markets and exhibitions in addition to exporting. To 90 countries around the world despite the economic embargo.
