A strike by Lufthansa pilots is becoming more likely: In a ballot, the voting members of the Cockpit Association voted in favor of a labor dispute with a very clear majority.

This was reported by the union after counting the votes.

At Lufthansa Passenger Airlines, 97.6 percent of participants voted for a strike.

At the freight subsidiary Cargo, approval was even higher at 99.3 percent.

This means that a strike by around 5,000 pilots at the Lufthansa core brand is possible with immediate effect, but this was not initially requested from the Executive Board.

Union official Marcel Gröls had already said in SPIEGEL on Thursday that if a majority of the pilots are in favor of a strike, that does not mean that there will be a strike immediately.

"It's up to the Lufthansa management now," Gröls said.

“If it makes good offers, the pilots get a response from us.

But if these offers don't come, we have little choice but to go on strike."

Pilots are demanding more wages and compensation for inflation

According to Gröls, the pilots are demanding "5.5 percent more remuneration and then automatic inflation compensation" this year.

After six rounds, the negotiations are considered deadlocked, at the same time both sides had reaffirmed their desire to reach an agreement.

»Since the actual negotiations have so far been conducted constructively, we continue to rely on a quick agreement.

In any case, we are ready for this and not too far apart on the matter," said Lufthansa HR Director Michael Niggemann of the "Bild am Sonntag".

A Ver.di spokeswoman told the newspaper that there would be no strikes in the next week.

"Negotiations will continue and we hope that the employers will present a good and final offer so that the conflict can be resolved at the negotiating table."

Ground staff had already gone on strike last week, and hundreds of Lufthansa flights had been cancelled.
