"I will enact a law that limits the power of exclusive food importers and producers"

As part of the talks with MKs who held economic positions in the outgoing Knesset and intend to engage in the field in the next Knesset as well, we met with MK Michael Biton, Chairman of the Economy Committee, who stood out in the current Knesset in the fight against the cost of living, sometimes even when things were against the interests of the coalition. What will he do? In the next term?

The Chairman of the Economy Committee, MK Michael Biton, stood out in the current Knesset in regards to the fight against the cost of living, and to his credit it can be said that he was not afraid to start fights both with major factors in the economy, and with the finance officials - and sometimes even against his coalition members.

In a conversation with Walla!

He says, in response to a hypothetical question, what he will do if he is unexpectedly appointed the Minister of Finance: "I will make sure that laws that are supposed to affect the cost of living such as the Import and Export Law, the Open Banking Law and other laws are properly implemented. I will enact laws that limit the power of food importers and exclusive food producers, and chains and cartels that adjust prices for food."

How will you handle the cost of living?

"Taking care of the cost of living includes a number of steps that need to be carried out, such as the analysis of the largest expenditure of the citizen, which is the expenditure on housing, food, cars and education, in these expenses there are actions that the state can carry out such as affordable housing, small apartments on state land around the center of the country for less than a million shekels, Or apartments measuring 80 square meters on a quarter of a dunam in the outskirts with the potential to double the roof even for less than a million shekels.

Regarding education, gradually abolish the parents' payments, and subsidize the children's daycare centers.

In the food sector, to fight import and production monopolies and supervision and control of prices in chains.

In the other issues as well, there are reforms that we have already begun to implement and we will continue to work and monitor so that this happens."

What is your food for Israel's economy, for the coming years?

"A stable and growing economy that maintains its position in the world and its ability to compete in a global environment, alongside acts of reducing disparities and equal opportunities in society and protecting the weakest, and of course a war of attrition with hidden and visible monopolies and cartels that harm the citizen."

How do you intend to solve the housing crisis?

"The solution to the housing crisis includes measures of affordable housing, a small apartment measuring 60-70 meters in the center of the country on state land for less than a million shekels, encouraging migration to the periphery and there to get attached carracks measuring 80 meters on a quarter of a dunam also for less than a million shekels.

Increasing the procurement of public housing, and converting public housing assistance funds into long-term rentals of apartments by the state, purchasing apartments by leasing to the state. We find two billion shekels for rent assistance. Can it be converted to assets in the state's background instead of this money going to waste? In addition, the freeze "Rental prices and adding control over prices. Encouraging authorities to receive plots for the construction of apartments for rent for young couples and students owned by the municipalities"

and finally, is there any action you would like to praise the current Minister of Finance for?

"His willingness to be flexible in his positions, and at my personal request to double the grants for those earning less than two hundred and fifty million shekels to five hundred million shekels, and to find ways in the law to pay this payment in the middle of the year and not at the end of the year, this flexibility made it possible to help hundreds of thousands of people."
