Japanese Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda affirmed today that his country will not withdraw from the Russian (Sakhalin 1) oil and gas project, pointing out that the project is an important source of energy for Japan.

"The Russian (Sakhalin 1) project has contributed to the diversification of Japanese energy supplies and is an important source for Japan, which depends on the Middle East for 90 percent of its crude oil imports," Reuters quoted Hagiuda as saying at a press conference, stressing that Tokyo had not changed its intention to retain its share in The project.

Japan recently reiterated, through Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, that it will not withdraw from the (Sakhalin 2) project for liquefied natural gas and oil, because it is "necessary for energy security."
