As part of the import reform, the Ministry of Economy and Industry went to a public hearing regarding the introduction of a standard for disposable diapers for babies, in the import route according to international standards.

The meaning of the step is that diapers determined to meet international standards will not have to undergo Israeli standardization, which will slightly limit the advantage that official importers have in the competition against parallel importers of brands that are sold in Israel today, and will also open the market to the import of additional brands.

The draft order was published yesterday for a period of 21 days, during which the ministry calls on importers, manufacturers, consumers, retailers and laboratories to express their position.

At the end of receiving the references, the positions will be examined and an updated order will be published - according to the ministry's announcement.

Importing into Israel is currently possible in accordance with the Israeli standard.

But even in Europe, a regulation is required that includes compliance with a variety of requirements concerning the materials from which the diapers are made, so that they do not pose a risk to the baby's health, including absorbent materials and fabrics that come into contact with the skin.

An additional import route, in accordance with international standards, will be added to the existing route, according to which the importer declares compliance with the Israeli standard. The existence of both routes will expand the variety of diapers available in the market and is expected to affect the price drop due to options for choosing between a variety of products.

Minister of Economy and Industry, Orna Barbiei

: "The disposable diaper market is controlled by a very limited number of manufacturers and importers. In the absence of competition, prices in Israel are high compared to the rest of the world. Disposable diapers are a necessary consumer product that is a significant expense for young parents.

In March, before the introduction of the import reform Effectively, we moved the diapers from an inspection track to a declaration track only. Yesterday we took another step by going to a public hearing to allow imports according to a European standard, at the same time we will work to adapt the Israeli standard to the European regulation. This decision will lead to the removal of import barriers, encouraging the entry of new importers and opening the market to competition."
