The Homs Chamber of Industry held a workshop on saffron cultivation entitled “Syria’s Promising Gold,” which included a photo report on saffron and several lectures during which the economic and medical importance of the saffron plant was explained as an important investment opportunity and a development project that can be implemented.

The workshop also included a presentation of the most important indicators of success and the latest results of scientific research that show the quality of the saffron seasons produced and the suitability of this cultivation to the Syrian environmental conditions and the most important proposals for the development of this crop from an agricultural and industrial point of view.

The advisor of the Federation of Chambers of Agriculture in Syria, Dr. Abdul Masih Duaij, pointed to the role of the Chambers of the Federation of Agriculture in contributing to the dissemination of saffron cultivation by linking farmers to market the bulbs, pointing to the quick financial profit that its cultivation achieves, as they can recover the capital directly.

And Daij indicated that saffron is an important plant from an economic and medical point of view, and it is considered an important investment opportunity that gives great financial profits and succeeds as a micro-development project that any farmer can carry out within a garden of a very small area. Cancer and its prevention, and it is also included in various medical and pharmaceutical industries to treat diseases of the central nervous system, heart diseases, anemia, and is considered a memory booster.

Regarding the saffron experience in Syria, between Daij, it is a successful and distinguished experience, due to the suitability of the climate and the quality of the saffron seasons in Syria and their conformity with international standards. They are concentrated in the orchards of the city of Homs and the villages of Al-Bureij, Rablah, Soukra and various locations in the governorate.

For his part, Dr. Mahmoud Shbak, Director of the Biotechnology Research Center at Al-Baath University, pointed out its important and different medical benefits and its entry as an active substance in medicines to treat several diseases, pointing out that the Homs Cultivation Chamber, in cooperation with Al-Baath University and the Biotechnology Research Center, seeks to increase the areas cultivated in it and contribute to its marketing and delivery of chromates to farmers And selling it among themselves after testing it and recovering the capital for a period of less than a year.

At the end of the workshop, proposals were made on the necessity of creating an office at the country level to cultivate it and coordinate between the governorates according to the specifics of each of them and their appropriate climate, in addition to spreading the culture of its cultivation as an important economic project.
