(S+) Why Deutsche Bahn has so many problems

2022-09-05T04:11:58.741Z

The last IC ran in 2014 - since then Trier can only be reached by regional trains. Hear in the podcast how the city is fighting for connection and what that reveals about the problems of the railway.

Two abbreviations alternate on the display board in Trier main station: RE and RB, Regional-Express and Regional-Bahn.

There is no other way to get away from the train station, because Trier has lost the connection to the long-distance network.

If you ask around in the city, the people of Trier primarily choose one means of transport: the car.

How can it be that a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants and four million visitors a year is so poorly connected today?

At a time when the federal government is announcing a traffic turnaround and wants to double the number of passengers on the rails by 2030?

"I have the feeling that people in Berlin aren't interested in the situation on the periphery," says Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe.

In this episode of SPIEGEL Daily you can find out why he has not yet managed to bring long-distance trains back to Trier and what Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing should change now.

In addition, Gerald Traufetter from the SPIEGEL business department explains how failures in transport policy have led to the problems facing the railways and what steps are now necessary.
