More than 313,000 tons, estimates of apple production for the current season, and Homs ranked first

The Office of Apples in the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform estimated Syria's production of apples for the current season at 31,756 tons.

The director of the office at the Ministry of Agriculture, Eng. Raafat Faraj Bayn, told SANA that the area planted with apples amounted to about 49,124 hectares, with about 14.6 million trees, of which 12.4 million are fruitful.

Faraj explained that Homs governorate comes first with production for this year, where production estimates are about 125 thousand tons, followed by the Damascus countryside governorate with about 60 thousand tons and As-Suwayda in the third place with 59 thousand tons, while production estimates in Lattakia governorate are 26,716 tons and in Tartous 23,300 tons. While in Hama 14,360 tons and in Quneitra 5019 tons, As-Suwayda governorate ranks first in terms of area with 16 thousand hectares, followed by Damascus countryside 12,733 hectares and Homs 11,237 hectares.

Faraj pointed out that 90 percent of the Syrian apples are of the "Golden Delicious" and "Starking Delicious" varieties, and 10 percent of the rest of the varieties, indicating that last year's production amounted to 316,000 tons.
