South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission today fined Google and Meta 100 billion won (US$71.9 million) for collecting personal information without users' consent and using it for customized online advertising and other purposes.
Yonhap news agency reported that the commission agreed at a public meeting to impose fines of 69.2 billion won on Google and 30.8 billion won on Meta, respectively, in the commission's first penalties for collecting personal advertising data.
The fines are the highest ever imposed for alleged violations of the Personal Information Protection Act.
The commission also ordered that Google and Meta notify their users clearly and simply and obtain their consent if they would collect or use user behavior data on websites or applications and said its investigation confirmed that Google and Meta had not clearly and did not obtain prior consent from users when they collected or analyze this data to estimate their personal interests and use this information to deliver personalized advertising.
