The colorful houses with cleverly maintained gardens nicely dress Ahus, an unpretentious Swedish village by the Baltic Sea.

Typical, this village of 10,000 souls has been the historic birthplace, for more than a hundred years, of the Absolut vodka brand.

Every drop of spirits sold around the world comes from a single site nestled in the heart of Ahus, from manufacturing to exporting the bottles - 600,000 are produced there every day.

At Absolut, vodka, called “little water” in Russian, is produced exclusively from winter wheat.

Sown in the fall, it then spends the winter buried under the snow and gains its unique character, sweet and rich in starch.

The Swedish company has been buying this raw material from 338 farmers in the region for several generations.

Leftover alcohol turned into biofuels

Acquired in 2008 by Pernod Ricard for 6 billion euros, it has made localism the heart of its circular economy policy: each resource used for the beverage comes from a radius of 200 km around Ahus.

Above all, energy saving and carbon neutrality have become an obsession for the brand, which hopes to achieve the Holy Grail of zero fossil throughout its production chain by 2030.

Energy sobriety: France wants to prevent manufacturers from producing less

“Since 2004, we have reduced our energy consumption per liter of vodka by almost 50%,”

says Anna Scheil, vice-president of operations

.

With the distillery producing more than 100 million liters per year, 90% powered by hydroelectricity from Norwegian dams, the savings are considerable.

Production residues are reused as much as possible.

Leftover alcohol is transformed into biofuels for transport, the ethanol produced during fermentation is sold to Air Liquide and the steam from the process is used to heat the distillery.

In addition, the organic waste discharged during the distillation process, rich in protein, feeds 290,000 cows and pigs from neighboring farms.

Absolut is committed to multiplying circular initiatives.

An essential resource for vodka, water, which makes up 60% of the spirit, is drawn directly below the distillery from a large aquifer, between 70 and 140 meters underground.

“We know that we, and other companies, are going to be around for a long time.

We must therefore take care of this water and further reduce our consumption”,

points out Tina Robertsson, director of sustainable performance.

Moreover, eco-responsible or not, alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health.
