While many suppliers have already drastically increased their gas tariffs, electricity prices for end consumers have risen only slightly so far. Industry representatives fear that this will soon change.

According to the VKU association, Germany's municipal utilities are expecting significantly higher electricity prices in the coming year.

So far, these have risen less than the gas prices, which have recently been more in focus, for example because the EEG surcharge has been eliminated.

But further increases in electricity are also to be expected, a spokesman for the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung".

After prices have risen by more than 10 percent so far, an increase of around 60 percent is expected for the coming year.

When it comes to gas, end customers of Stadtwerke often have to pay between 30 and 60 percent more than they did before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But there are also municipal utilities that have to more than double their prices, sometimes even more.

From the point of view of the municipal companies, the most recent gas price reductions in the wholesale trade are not yet a sign of the all-clear.

Many citizens fear financial problems

Meanwhile, it is becoming apparent that the drastically rising energy costs could overwhelm many households in Germany.

According to a survey, a third of citizens expect to have problems paying their energy bills next winter.

Almost 40 percent of those surveyed assume that they will not be able to pay for their electricity and gas or will have to face considerable difficulties, as the "DeutschlandTrend in the ARD morning magazine" reported on Thursday.

It is mainly people with lower incomes and younger people who are worried about their energy bills.

In addition, more than eight out of ten respondents in all age groups expected that more jobs could be lost due to the high gas and electricity prices.

However, most respondents (59 percent) continued to assume that there would be no outages in the electricity and gas supply during the winter months.
