Construction Minister Geywitz wants to better protect tenants in the event of terminations

Because electricity and heating costs are rising rapidly, the SPD politician Klara Geywitz is counting on better protection against evictions for tenants in the event of payment arrears. For this, she takes the FDP to task.

Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) advocates extending the protection of tenants in the event of payment arrears.

Geywitz told the "Bild am Sonntag" that anyone who gets a proper notice of termination from their landlord because of such arrears should be able to cancel it by making subsequent payments.

The amount due should be able to be paid by the move-out date in order to invalidate the termination.

Geywitz appealed to Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) to quickly implement the decisions of the traffic light coalition on the third relief package.

The package says “it is very clear that adjustments to energy law are intended to prevent people from being left without electricity and gas”.

Work should also be done on social tenancy law.

She assumes that Buschmann is "already preparing intensively for the relevant changes in the law," said the SPD politician.

The relief package agreed by the government partners two weeks ago has a volume of 65 billion euros.

Among other things, it provides for direct payments for pensioners and students, an electricity price brake to reduce household costs and a heating cost subsidy for housing benefit recipients.
