Carina was asked about her salary expectations during the interview - and this was accepted immediately. She now knows that the sum she gave was far too low. Can you renegotiate now?

Carina, 29, asks: »I applied for an exciting role as an advisor to the board.

During the interview, I was told that I should give my salary expectations without obligation.

That was in one of the first conversations before I found out more details about the future task.

Now I have the employment contract with this far too low salary.

I stacked too low and didn't dare to name my maximum goal.

I now know that this position has a higher salary.

I want this job because it offers me great development prospects.

How can I get a higher salary included in the employment contract without losing my credibility?'

dear carina,

I can very well imagine that you are really annoyed with yourself: If only you had asked for more and simply stated your maximum goal!

Why this false modesty?

If only you had prepared better for your interviews and the possible salaries in this job!

The accusations against yourself will probably sound something like this in your head at the moment.

This is understandable, especially since you yourself say that this position appeals to you and that you see very good prospects for yourself in it.

And now you are faced with the dilemma: just agree as if nothing had happened, the main thing is that you have the job - or renegotiate the salary proposal?

But how, without admitting that you underestimated the salary?

What effect does that have on the future employer if it turns out during the job interview that you were wrong on this important topic?

Let out the anger and sort yourself

Let it out!

Feel free to vent your anger, if possible in a private setting.

Get out in nature, go for walks, exercise, turn on music, whatever feels good to help you flush those negative energies out of your system.

And then we set about achieving our goals with renewed determination.

Do you really want this position?

Then it is also worth standing up for an appropriate salary, taking courage and making an appointment to clarify the contractual details.

Renegotiation as an opportunity

Renegotiating a salary proposal can be worthwhile.

You should not miss this opportunity out of caution or fear of attracting attention.

It helps if you put yourself in the position of your future employer: what goes down better?

An employee who, out of sheer shame, reluctance and insecurity, gives in, does not renegotiate and later lives this behavior in everyday work life?

Or an employee who knows what your services are worth?

The right strategy is crucial

Now it is important to justify your higher salary claim well and to substantiate it with arguments.

If the scope of the tasks to be taken on turns out to be significantly larger than communicated in the interview, you should address this.

It is important that it is about the task description and the expected scope and not about the fact that you underestimated yourself or found out afterwards that the position is better paid.

You can think about this and state to what extent the new task requires your full commitment in addition to your expertise.

Of course you bring everything with you and are ready to develop further.

For example, you could state that...

  • ... you have offers in the amount of your desired salary, but you would like to start with this employer.

  • ... you would have expected an offer in the amount of your maximum target based on your market value.

  • ... you found out more about the complexity of this position after further interviews and the salary question was not final in the first interviews.

With attitude towards the goal

Talk about your future job and the challenges of the industry.

It will help you to take salary for granted, like your tasks or working hours.

It is helpful if you can develop a vision for yourself, for your own work in the job and can explain to your future employer in a comprehensible way what you specifically contribute and what you would like to change, improve or move in your area of activity.

This way you will not be perceived as a petitioner who goes back to your employer and asks for more money because you initially underestimated the value of your work.

But as a discussion partner at eye level who shows interest in finding a good solution.

With this attitude, you will master your conversation with peace of mind.
