China's imports of Russian coal rose last August, reaching their highest level in five years.
And Sputnik quoted data from the General Administration of Customs as saying that the country's imports of Russian coal last month amounted to 8.54 million tons, up from the previous peak of 7.42 million tons last July.
This figure represents an increase of 57 percent over the same period last year and is the highest level since the statistics began in 2017.
China's imports from Russia have increased in recent months at a time when Europe has suspended purchases from the country against the backdrop of a special military operation in Ukraine aimed at protecting Donbass residents from attacks by Ukrainian forces.
With the severe drought and heat wave hitting western and southern China since late July, coal-fired power plants have prepared production to meet the growing demand for air conditioning and the supply gap from hydropower plants.
