The forum 'Latin America, the United States and Spain in the global economy' discusses world news with the presence of Pedro Sánchez and Gustavo Petro

The event organized by EL PAÍS and the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce is held this Wednesday in New York


The global economy is experiencing moments of uncertainty.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine has hampered recovery, pushed inflation in the world's major countries to levels not seen in decades, and prompted central banks to tighten monetary policy.

In this context, a forum organized this Wednesday in New York by EL PAÍS and the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce analyzes the challenges that Latin America, the United States and Spain face in the global economy, which is the motto of the event in in which, among others, the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, participate.

The forum, sponsored by Abertis, Baker&McKenzie, Hiberus and Iberia and with the collaboration of the OEI, is broadcast live on the EL PAÍS website, from 8:30 a.m., New York time (2:30 p.m., Spanish peninsular time).

It is held at the Yale Club in New York in the same week that the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) meets in the city.

The Assembly is also marked by the war in Ukraine and the geopolitical tensions that affect the world.

Sánchez and Petro participate in the Assembly and have planned a bilateral meeting.

Before that, they are featured speakers at this Wednesday's event, in the case of the President of the Spanish Government with a speech and in that of the Colombian President with a conversation with the director of EL PAÍS América, Jan Martínez-Ahrens.

The president of Prisa, Joseph Oughourlian, and the president of the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce, Alan D. Solomont, open the event with a few words of welcome.

José Manuel Albares, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, gives the first speech, which is followed by the intervention of the Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment of the United States Department of State, José W. Fernández.

Tim Robertson, General Manager of DHL Global Forwarding for the Americas, addresses the topic of restoring trust in global trade and the supply chain.

To discuss the situation in Latin America and the recovery after the pandemic, the forum features an interview with Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica;

another to Christian Asinelli, Corporate Vice President of Strategic Programming at CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, and with a speech by Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the Organization of Ibero-American States.

The review of the macroeconomic indicators is given by Lisa Schineller, director of Sovereign Ratings for the Americas at S&P Global Ratings, and Ernesto Revilla, managing director and head of the Latin American economy at Citigroup, in a discussion moderated by Carla Arimont, vice president of the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce.

Lluís Sererols, financial director of Elizabeth River Crossings, an Abertis company;

María Jesús López Solás, commercial director of Networks and Alliances of Iberia;

Marcos Latorre, General Manager of Hiberus International Corp, and João Costeira, Executive General Manager of Clients and Low Carbon Generation and member of the Repsol Executive Committee, will participate in a colloquium on renewable energies, resilient infrastructures, new jobs and new markets.
