Island hopping in North Friesland: the ferry is late? Ah, how wonderful!

Experience a lot and still switch off, this is possible in the North Frisian Wadden Sea. Four days, four islands and Halligen and plenty of time to look at waves, meadows and mounds - that's how it works.

Anyone planning island hopping in the North Frisian Wadden Sea has to juggle the ferry schedules of several shipping companies.

And think: How long do I want to stay where?

And where to stay?

Here is some help:

I would have preferred to take the

train

to get to the start port of Schlüttsiel and the end port of Dagebüll.

But that failed because I wasn't allowed to use the necessary S-Bahn by bike in the morning in Hamburg's rush hour.

If you have more time and only take an evening ferry to Langeneß, for example, you can try taking your bike on several local trains and may have to cycle 17 kilometers from Bredstedt to Schlüttsiel.

From Dagebüll it is also necessary to change trains several times.

The same applies to tour planning from Dagebüll.

My variant: pack the bike in the

car

and drive to Schlüttsiel by motorway and country road.

There at the port there is a large parking lot, the fees are limited.

Back from Dagebüll by bike to Schlüttsiel - against the wind.

Liner shipping companies that connect Halligen and islands are:

  • Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (WDR) on the routes Schlüttsiel-Hallig Hooge-Hallig Langeneß-Schlüttsiel, Dagebüll-Föhr-Amrum

  • Adler-Schiffe, which have, among other things, Dagebüll, Sylt, Amrum, Föhr, Hallig Hooge as ports in the plan

The Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrts GmbH runs to Pellworm from Nordstrand.

Danger!

Pay attention to the summer and winter ferry timetable!

Expand sectionAccommodations

As with long-distance hikes or bike tours, it is helpful to use hotel booking websites to research whether there is any affordable free accommodation at the desired time.

You either book through them or ask the hotels and guesthouses directly.

The offer on the Halligen such as Langeneß and Hooge is very limited, but room prices on Sylt, Amrum or Föhr can also rise to almost utopian levels in the high season.

As always, a trip like this is cheaper if you plan and book it in good time – but always pay attention to the cancellation options.
