Electricity bill up 500%: Belgian bakery forced to close permanently

2022-09-27T04:41:03.384Z

Many Belgian bakers are no longer able to pay electricity bills which have risen sharply due to the energy crisis.

The phenomenon is gaining momentum in Belgium.

The managers of the Dumont bakery, in the Belgian village of Vencimont a few kilometers from the French border, announced on Sunday in a Facebook post, spotted by La Libre Belgique, to close their establishment due to the sudden increase in the cost of electricity.

“Like some colleagues before us, it is time, in turn, to thank our government for its inaction and indifference, it is time to thank you, you, for your loyalty, and it is time, finally, to draw our reverence, “they wrote, in a message relayed nearly 18,000 times.

By publishing a photo of their invoice as proof, the managers of this bakery explained that the price of electricity had risen from 1,860 euros per month to 11,863 euros in September, an increase of 500%.

A bread at 17 euros

If they decided to pass on this colossal cost to the price of their goods, they would have to sell their bread… around 17 euros, according to them.

“It is an aberration!

It's not a

raise

...it's an assassination!

The end of a profession… and the lives that go with it!

“, they denounced, specifying that the establishment would close its doors Sunday at noon.

On their Facebook page, which has grown since their viral publication, they relayed messages from other bakeries in the same case in Belgium, such as the "Arts et Fils" establishment in Soumagne, which saw its bill rise to 9,500 euros in August.

"If the political world does not set limits and does not take decisions commensurate with the cataclysm in which we find ourselves, you will soon have no more open bakeries in Belgium", warned the managers of the Dumont bakery, who was the only one in the village of Vencimont.

“They call me every day.

I am contacted by more and more bakers who can no longer meet their energy bills.

They are all affected, ”confirmed to RTBF, Albert Denoncin, president of the Federation of French-speaking bakers.

France, like the flat country, is facing soaring energy prices following the war in Ukraine.

The Razaire bakery, based in Marignier in Haute-Savoie, for example, saw its electricity bills tripled in one year, according to the Dauphiné Libéré.

An increase which remains much lower than with our neighbours, due in particular to the implementation of the tariff shield.

But what will happen if the latter is not renewed?
