Long skirts, uncrossed legs, "a certain distance": Qatar dictates its rules to women for the 2022 World Cup

With just weeks to go before the start of the football competition, which runs from November 20 to December 18, Qatar has reminded supporters of conditions in the country.


The 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar.

Ahead of the event, the organizing committee published a 16-page document, distilled into six chapters, listing the instructions and recommendations for people who will attend the competition.

“Do not approach female guests with your hands, avoid hugging.

You can greet women verbally by keeping a certain distance”, recommends the document in the first place.

Clothing rules remain strict for women and men.

The Qatari culture being very conservative, the male sex will have a duty to dress in sober and modest outfits, so that the knees and shoulders are always covered.

The supporters, they will have to dress in pants or long skirts, and cover their chest as well as their neck.

However, wearing the veil will not be compulsory.

The right hand on the heart

On the "religious level", it is also not recommended to "shake hands" with a person of the opposite sex.

Also, the document advises foreigners not to stare a Qatari in the eye, as this is seen as "rude and inappropriate".

“Fan Zones”

Finally, alcohol will be authorized during the World Cup, but under certain conditions.

Drinks will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. outside the stadium, in bars located within a certain perimeter, as well as in “fan zones”.

On the other hand, it will be forbidden to be in a state of intoxication in the public space.

The document also recalls that drugs, pork products and any element related to pornography are prohibited in the country.
