The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to a four-month high.
Reuters quoted the Department of Labor as saying: The reason for the rise in claims for benefits is Hurricane Fiona, as requests increased in particular in Puerto Rico, which was swept by the storm in the second half of September.
Applications submitted for the first time for government unemployment benefits increased by 29,000 to an adjusted number of 219,000 in the week ending October 1.
Unemployment claims came during the last week, higher than expectations estimated at 204 thousand applications, amid pressures on the labor market due to high levels of inflation and an increase in energy prices.
