Train tickets for the winter holidays: towards a price increase?

2022-11-08T17:49:52.093Z

The sale for the months of January to March starts this Wednesday at 6 am at the SNCF. A major question remains: what tariffs will be

Ski enthusiasts during the winter holidays, in February and March, will be able to finalize the planning of their holidays.

SNCF is putting on sale, this Wednesday, November 9 from 6 a.m., TGV and Intercités train tickets for the period from January 3 to March 26, 2023. And even until July 3 for OUIGO (high speed and classic trains ).

This therefore covers school holidays, between February 4 and March 6, depending on the different zones.

As with each opening of sales, you will have to get up early to get a place on the expected train and at the ideal time.

At a still affordable price, while fares swell as the departure date approaches, especially during school holidays, when it is very busy.

"Anticipate the purchase of your tickets as much as possible to take advantage of our best prices", we also encourage at SNCF Voyageurs.

And for good reason.

No general rate increase, but...

Faced with an explosion in its energy costs, the rail group is considering an increase in ticket prices (TGV and Intercités), on January 1, 2023. Will it therefore be applied as soon as sales open this Wednesday?

A priori, no.

"The tickets put on sale will be at current prices, since work is still in progress on the prices for next year", says SNCF Voyageurs, which is still examining its "economic prospects, in particular the prices of energy and inflation”.

One thing is certain, there is no general increase applied to all, on all SNCF tickets.

The Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, has also asked the SNCF to set up a "tariff shield" with an increase lower than inflation, and protection for low-income families and young people.

“This involves protecting subscriptions and OUIGOs, in particular”, we breathe in the entourage of the minister.

"It's in line with what we're working on," says SNCF Voyageurs.

In this period, protecting the most fragile makes sense.

The "ongoing" reflection on the price list should be completed at the end of November.

The hypothesis of a freeze on the prices of OUIGO tickets and the Advantage Card (49 euros) and its ceilings (from 39 to 79 euros depending on the trip) seems serious.

“On the other hand, perhaps the ceilings of the reduction card will be reached much more often…” slips an internal source.

Business trips in the viewfinder

The SNCF would rather concentrate its efforts and the increase on business travellers.

This would consist of significantly increasing prices on lines and times used for business trips.

Typically, a morning departure at 8 am on the Paris-Lyon line, in one direction or the other.

The French with greater purchasing power, probably a little less sensitive to price, will also be targeted, as much as possible.

“You can leave the same call prices at the opening of sales, since those who buy their ticket several months in advance are those who are the most sensitive to price, analyzes Arnaud Aymé, transport specialist at Sia Partners .

On the other hand, nothing prevents inflating fares at particular times or on particular lines, whose tickets we know will find takers, whatever the price.
