Engineer Ali Al-Dahouri, head of the Horticulture Department in the Plant Production Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, told SANA that the initial production estimates for the pomegranate crop this year amounted to 74,937 tons, most of which were distributed to irrigated agriculture with more than 62.5 thousand tons, while in rain-fed agriculture it amounted to about 12.4 thousand tons. He pointed out that the harvesting process is continuing in a number of governorates.
Regarding the distribution of production estimates in the governorates between Dahouri, Idlib governorate came first with a production of 16,443 tons, then Aleppo 15608 tons, Daraa 15,249 tons, while estimates of Lattakia governorate’s production amounted to 9392 tons, and Tartous 8177 tons, while the rest of the production was distributed in smaller quantities in the rest of the governorates.
He added: The total area planted with pomegranate trees amounted to 3,793 hectares, most of it for irrigated agriculture, with 3,418 hectares, and the rest is rainforest, while the total number of fruit trees this year exceeded 967,000 trees out of about 1.1 million planted trees, pointing out that the most important cultivated varieties are sour and sweet.
The French cultivar spreads over large areas due to its high quality and productivity, and the pomegranate tree does not require much service, as it needs pruning and watering at a rate of 7 irrigations distributed throughout the year.
