Pedestrian drives, collateral victims of the mayors' offensive against "dark stores"

DECRYPTION - A decree expected by the end of the year should consider pedestrian drives as warehouses.

By striving to regulate the establishment of "dark stores" in the city center, the government risks making collateral victims: pedestrian drives, these order pick-up points opened in recent years by Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché and Auchan to develop their e-commerce business.

NielsenIQ counts 224, including a quarter in Paris.

A decree expected by the end of the year should indeed consider pedestrian drives as warehouses, in the same way as “dark stores”.

They are now considered as businesses, which allows them to establish themselves in commercial premises without further formalities.

In the future, “dark stores” like pedestrian drives will only be able to be installed in premises intended for warehouses, which are much rarer to find in cities.

The town halls will also have the means to exclude them from areas that they do not consider conducive to their installation, for example a residential area or a shopping street.
