SNCF will take into account the carbon footprint of its suppliers in its calls for tenders

The purpose of the operation is "to encourage the ecological transition" of suppliers, declared Mikaël Lemarchand at a press conference.

Next year, the SNCF will include a "

carbon ton price

" in all its calls for tenders to encourage its suppliers to improve their carbon footprint, the company announced on Wednesday.

The company decided last May to set a price per tonne of carbon at 100 euros for the year 2022. With this indicator, it hopes to inform its investment decisions, by monetizing the carbon emissions of its suppliers and taking them taken into account at the same level as the financial factor.

The price per tonne of carbon must then increase every year.

Currently, "

we have 30,000 suppliers, including a large proportion of VSEs and SMEs

", continued Mikaël Lemarchand.

But the effort must first focus on the biggest players and "

the purchasing department asked our 55 biggest suppliers a few weeks ago to tell them + we want a carbon footprint + because everyone has to committed to the transition

,” he explained.

It acts, for example, by buying “

green rails

” produced by electric furnaces and with recovered steel, but for a significantly higher price.

This sector emits 60 to 90% less CO2 than the traditional process

”, assures the SNCF.

The public group also said it wanted to focus its efforts on TER trains, which are only 55 to 60% of them electric.

In 2023, we will have the experimentation of the hybrid train, in 2024 we will have the battery train and 2025 the first turns of the wheel of the hydrogen trains

”, underlined Mikaël Lemarchand.

While he recalled SNCF's desire to use more virtuous suppliers upstream, he also insisted on the need to encourage customers to opt for less polluting behavior.

For the past year, we have increased bicycle reservations in Intercités and TGVs by 20 to 30% and there are 40,000 secure places to park bicycles in stations, with a target of 90,000 by 2025

,” he said. -he indicates.
