The capital's airport BER has stopped flight operations for the time being due to an action by climate activists.

This was announced by a spokesman for the airport of the dpa.

A spokesman for the Berlin Federal Police spoke of an "incident" involving several people who were in the non-public area of the airport, as reported by AFP.

Emergency services are on site.

No further details were given.

According to dpa, the activists of the group "Last Generation" apparently came to the airport site in two places, both on the north and on the south side.

Therefore, both slopes are now closed.

Initially, the airport had not reported any restrictions on flight operations.

However, the situation on site has since changed, the spokesman said.

The climate protest group said in a statement that several supporters had blocked the airport runway.

Some of them would have stuck to the asphalt, while others lead the maneuvering area with bicycles and brought air traffic to a standstill.

Shortly before entering the airport premises, the group said they informed the police about their plans via an emergency call.

The activists want to protest against the climate damage of flights.

The activists streamed the action live on Twitter.

There you could see how they snapped through a fence shortly after 4 p.m. and entered the airport area.

They then held banners up to the camera and explained their motives.

It could also be seen how activists allegedly glued themselves to the ground.

About ten minutes after the start of the action, blue lights could be seen in the live stream, and a little later police officers could also be heard.

As of 5:30 p.m., the first flights with delays were reported on the BER homepage.

The Flightradar website also showed that individual planes were circling not far from BER or that planes with earlier departure times were still on the ground.
