Thanks to numerous state aids, many of them have been able to improve their profitability.

This is the case of pharmacists who come by far at the top of the trade and craft professions having earned the most money in 2021. Admittedly, their pharmacies remained open during the periods of confinement, but thanks in particular to the very numerous state-funded Covid screening tests, they have significantly increased their profits: they thus earned 158,371 euros on average in 2021, compared to 141,530 euros in 2020 (140,037 euros in 2019), underlines the Federation of approved management centers (FGCA) which analyzed the tax returns of 131,500 very small businesses (TPE) subject to income tax.

Opticians with a current result of 78,582 euros in 2021 against 62,689 euros in 2020 (66,370 euros in 2019) are on the second step of the podium.

This is followed by the hotel and catering industry, the sector having received by far the most state aid in 2021 (solidarity fund compensating for loss of turnover, partial unemployment, etc.).

The most profitable are the café-tabacs which also sell games of chance and newspapers.

They come in third place of all professions, with 74,943 euros in earnings, compared to 52,988 euros in 2019. Ambulance taxis follow with 74,943 euros in profits (67,914 euros in 2019).

Tobacco-newspaper-games are in fifth position with 69,876 euros against 56,424 euros in 2019.

The owners of hotel-restaurants also made money, with a net current result of 66,035 euros, more than double than in 2020 and 2019, notes the organization of accountants FGCA.

As for simple restaurants that do not provide accommodation, they brought in an average of 65,171 euros compared to 34,523 in 2020 and 32,457 in 2019. Hotels without restaurants come at the back of the pack with a return of 61,923 euros (45,651 euros in 2019).

Other sectors are doing less well.

The repair of household appliances is at the top of the ten sectors earning the least money (24,082 euros in 2021 against 22,080 euros in 2019).

Next comes cabinetmaking (23,951 euros in 2021 and 21,677 euros in 2019) and hairdressing salons with 22,951 euros in earnings on average last year (19,217 euros in 2019).

Printing (22,800 euros in 2021), aesthetics (22,549 euros in 2021 against 16,173 euros in 2019) and tapestry decoration (22,114 euros in 2021 after 19,686 euros in 2019) come behind.

Dry cleaners (19,167 euros) and haberdashery (18,825 euros) are at the back of the pack.

All sectors combined, VSEs brought in 41,000 euros in 2021. But 20% of them generated an income below the net minimum wage, i.e. 14,000 euros, according to the FCGA study.
