The US has banned the import and sale of telecommunications and surveillance equipment from well-known Chinese manufacturers.

The competent authority FCC said on Friday that Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corp and Hytera Communications were among those affected.

It is the implementation of the final version of regulations enacted to protect US national security based on a 2021 law.

Washington has long feared that Beijing could use Chinese tech companies to spy on Americans.

"These new rules are an important part of our ongoing efforts to protect the American people from national security threats related to telecommunications," FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said.

Huawei declined to comment.

ZTE, Dahua, Hikvision and Hytera did not respond to requests for comment for the time being.

The FCC's rule applies to future device approvals, although the agency leaves open the option to revoke previous approvals.

"Our unanimous decision means that, for the first time in FCC history, we voted to ban new device approvals due to national safety concerns," tweeted Brendan Carr, a Republican FCC commissioner.
