Beet growers resist the energy shock

2022-11-30T18:34:30.465Z

DECRYPTION - They sold their beets at a higher price, which compensated for the soaring production costs and the drought.

“Encouraging beet price levels.”

For Nicolas Rialland, the general manager of the CGB, the union of French beet growers, the violent crisis of overproduction in Europe, which had plunged sugar prices in 2019, is well over.

This relieves the whole sector.

With an average remuneration of more than 40 euros per tonne for this 2022-2023 campaign, the approximately 23,700 French beet growers have seen their income improve by more than 70% compared to those of the 2019-2020 campaign.

This increase in prices paid to farmers by sugar manufacturers (Tereos, Cristal Union, etc.) is mainly linked to the skyrocketing European sugar prices.

In Europe, the industry no longer produces enough sugar.

The prices of this commodity therefore reached nearly 500 euros per tonne for delivery in September.
