It seems that there is no need to introduce eBay, the international and local trading platform, but what do you know about the people behind the company that changed our consumption culture?

: The hundreds of employees at eBay's Israeli branch (the company is only allowed to disclose the total number of employees worldwide) arrive at the company's offices in Kiryat Sapir in Netanya, spread over two floors.

On the floor is a gray carpet with a white frame, and here and there there are walls painted green, blue or red, with naive illustrations on one of them, objects related to children, on another musical instruments.

The meeting rooms have glass walls, the game room has sophisticated Sony armchairs, a huge screen, Xbox and PlayStation, and a considerable amount of games.

In the music room, there are acoustic and electric guitars, a drum system, African drums, a keyboard, microphones and a crazy amplification system and on the roof, the highlight - a basketball court with a decorated stand, a hydroponic garden that the employees cultivate and synthetic grass.

Two weeks ago there was a trios tournament with the participation of Google, Meta, and Microsoft.

Shimon Amsalem refereed and the eBay team came in second place.

Many microwaves, a pop-up and two-press toaster, a Nespresso coffee machine with 14 types of capsules, a soda tap and a beer tap, and a variety of instant coffee stations for those who don't want to drink from the machine.

In the refrigerator you can find all types of milk, smooth yogurt, goat, fruit, low calorie, a selection of pastrami and sausages, yellow cheese, Philadelphia, cottage, ski and salads such as tuna with vegetables, matbucha, purple cabbage and hummus.

: When

Nati

was little, he studied piano, law and Yiddish and also found time for the computer, which suited his fondness for organization and order.

In high school he already ran riot with 15 computer units and was sure that this was his direction in life.

But in the gap between high school and the army, he suddenly fell in love with biology and after military service as an officer, started to study a double degree in biology and medicine, when his ambition was to become a researcher.

At some point he noticed that he was more attracted to the computational side and was accepted into the honors program, flew to New York University for a semester, and entered strongly into computational research in neuroscience. When he returned to Israel, he started a neuroscience degree at the Weizmann Institute and delved into data.

The interface between biological and computational thinking excited him and he decided to give up academia and was accepted as a data scientist at a small startup in Tel Aviv.

After six years, too much management and less technology, he felt he wanted to reconnect with her and moved to another start-up and then Daniel was born.

"My priorities have completely changed," says Nati.

"I was looking for a place that would allow me to balance work and family and I came to eBay who advocate this. I joined as an applied researcher and I am engaged in structured information research.

"The team uses methods of data science and machine learning to make the information more accurate, organized, and accessible to all users.

A cool project I've been working on recently focuses on cases where users fill in missing or noisy information about products they're trying to sell.

"One example is the common use of slang, which is a trendy, constantly changing, and rapidly updating language. Because these are unconventional descriptions, it is much more difficult to accurately associate them with a catalog, and this can hinder the ability of buyers to find what they are interested in. Along with the friends The talented people on my team, we developed a model that knows how to learn such descriptions, and better predict the users' intent regarding the product they are trying to sell."

Matias

was born in Argentina and grew up in Buenos Aires.

When he turned six, Dad decided to spend an insane $1,000 to buy a Pentium 1 for home and after four months he and his siblings took it apart and put it back together.

The talk around the computer became dominant at home and remains so even today in the family, when his two brothers are involved in programming and following them he studied electronics, because there was no computer major in their high school.

After high school he worked for three years as a computer technician at the Ministry of Finance and decided to immigrate to Israel.

"I was twice in Israel, one of them in 'Tagalit' and when the economic situation in Argentina deteriorated, I thought it was an opportunity. I came straight to the studio, I did an immigrant preparation course, I studied sociology, anthropology, and business administration at the Hebrew University, and at the same time I was an usher on the light rail, a waiter and a computer technician on campus.

"After degree I worked as a personal banker and then I got married.

My wife and I realized that we could not continue to live on a salary of 5000 shekels and a rent of 3200 shekels and we decided to leave the country for Argentina or Venezuela.

"At the last minute I told her, let's do another attempt, and then they called her from eBay and offered her a job. She wasn't interested, but recommended me. I started in support and after almost two years, I moved to scheduling the operation and updating catalogs, and a year and a half ago I became a product manager."

Sheena

's father

He was a teacher and in the summer he would bring home a computer and she discovered the technological world.

She assembled a computer herself, sits down and develops games with the help of software and then started making movies.

In high school she studied physics and computers, and knew that this was her vocation.

Due to health reasons she did not join the army, started studying engineering at the Technion, realized it was not for her and switched to computer studies at Ort Brauda.

During her studies, she worked as a manual software tester at a start-up following someone she knew, and when he moved to eBay, he suggested that she try to get a student position as a Paul Stack programmer, and she stayed there even after finishing her studies.

"Today I'm on the team responsible for the Pokémon and Sports card collectors page and in the future we want to add support for anything a user wants to collect and help them manage it. As soon as they told us we were responsible for collecting, they gave us cards to feel it and someone got a card worth a hundred dollars" .

For the soul

: Sheena, who says she's a crazy geek, loves gaming since childhood and plays a lot in her free time.

In addition, she finds time to dive, cook, renew furniture and develop games.

With two small children, Mathias has almost no time to breathe, and there are no grandparents to help, because they are a 24-hour flight away.

He doesn't give up one thing - playing soccer on Sundays with a group of Argentines who call themselves "the worst at soccer."

Nati enjoys making information accessible to the public and for years lectured at the Davidson Institute, "I like to take something complex and confusing and find a simple way to explain it"

Added value

: Nati is less attached to the ice cream fridge and the treats and more impressed by the company's concern for the personal well-being of the employees.

"It's a very embracing place that supports the balance between the personal and the professional, and when I'm with my son or my wife, then I'm completely with them. I came to eBay from a start-up and there the border was completely blurred. They give us access to a platform that provides developmental support for the child and the relationship, there's paternity leave and all of that is completely not Obviously".

Matthias: "When our second was born, I divided the paternity leave, I divided the leave and for a month I was only with the child, a one-time experience. Apart from that, we receive support from the company for everything we need. During Corona, they gave us all the equipment, money for a babysitter, activities for the children and told us Specifically, first of all take care of yourselves and your families and then work. The goals remained - but became secondary."

They say there isn't a month they don't get something from the eBay brand, socks, pajamas, alcohol, amazing Purim parties and once a year, in the summer, they go out for the night at a luxury hotel, with performances like "Snake Fish", "The Jews", "Balkan Beat Box" , and "Tifax".

There are yoga classes, meditation, basketball on the roof, and "hit" and there are also great showers.

At every opportunity, a table is opened with treats, say, strawberries and whipped cream and a wall of donuts.

Besides, once a week a book arrives for those who don't have time and desire to go to the hairdresser.

Mathias says he saved him in Corona.

There is also a music room and you can jam there, and soon a gym will also open.

Sheena loves the annual hackathon.

"For a week, wild ideas are developed, a kind of invested happening, with booths, massages and whoever wins first place flies to the USA."

What to wear

: T-shirt, jeans, the simplest.

Where do you work

: Most of the week at home and a day at the office.

Super hybrid model.

Salary

: Nati says that the salary is completely competitive and the surrounding conditions are the ones that make the difference, at least for him.

"When you join the company, you get a share plan and every year there are rounds that add more shares and there is also a component of a share-based savings plan that is renewed every few months."

Mathias: "There are also annual processes of refreshing and updating salary."

"And what's important," adds Sheena, "that there is no difference in pay between women and men."

What's next

: Sheena says that it's terribly difficult to leave Ebay, because of the very family feeling, and Matthias also talks about this family feeling and the mutual help, which is why, he says, it's no wonder that people have been there for 12 years.

"One of the reasons I joined the company," says Nati, "is the strong research team. I look forward to learning and opening up and would love to get into management"
