Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) wants to explain in the coming year how the target of overcoming homelessness by 2030 can be achieved.
"This year we had initial talks with stakeholders at municipal and state level as well as the Federal President," she told the editorial network Germany (RND).
An action plan with concrete measures should soon follow.
The SPD politician referred to Finland as a positive example.
»Finland has managed to reduce the number of homeless people while it is increasing in many other European countries«.
An interesting approach in the country relates to the health system: "People are first given the living space, then everything else follows, such as therapy," said Geywitz.
Access to housing as a key
The federal government presented the first homelessness report on Thursday.
According to this, around 263,000 people in Germany have no permanent home.
Geywitz also told the RND that, despite the difficulties in the construction industry, he wanted to stick to the federal government's ambitious housing construction target.
According to this, 400,000 new apartments are to be built every year.
This year, it is expected that this target will be clearly missed.
The industry also assumes that in the coming year there will be less construction rather than more due to high material prices, interest rates and the shortage of skilled workers.
»The need is great, which is why I am not giving up on this goal.
Especially now that people have also come,” the Minister of Construction affirmed.
Incidentally, the new building goes hand in hand with the issue of homelessness.
The fact that this is now part of the Ministry of Construction shows that access to housing is seen as an essential key to overcoming homelessness, said Geywitz.
