The European Union wants to further tighten its sanctions against Iran.

A total of almost thirty other responsible persons and institutions are to be included on the EU sanctions lists, according to Brussels diplomats.

It is about human rights violations on the one hand and Iranian drone deliveries to Russia on the other.

The foreign ministers of the 27 member countries want to decide on the new punitive measures against Tehran on Monday in Brussels.

In connection with the violence against demonstrators in Iran, another 20 Iranian leaders and one organization are to be subject to asset and entry bans.

In addition, the EU ambassadors have prepared another sanctions package for Russia because of the Iranian drones used in the Ukraine war.

In this context, eight other responsible persons and institutions are to be added to the sanctions list.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) had also called for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to be included on the EU terror list.

According to a spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, this has been delayed because of the “difficult legal requirements”.

According to the common position of the EU, there must be investigations in a member state.

At the beginning of December, the Federal Prosecutor General took over investigations into attacks on synagogues in North Rhine-Westphalia, which media reports suspect the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to be behind.

According to the spokeswoman, it remains to be seen whether this will result in a new starting point.

The trigger for the nationwide protests was the death of the Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini.

She died in police custody on September 16 after being arrested by the Morality Police for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code.
