The work of couriers is important, especially before Christmas. But new figures show that wage growth over the past ten years has been meager compared to other sectors.

Postmen and parcel deliverers have a lot to do in the run-up to Christmas.

The workload has also increased enormously in other ways in recent years, not least due to the booming online trade.

Nevertheless, according to new figures from the Federal Statistical Office, delivery staff have only received below-average wage increases over the past ten years.

Full-time employees in the industry earned an average of EUR 3,022 gross per month in 2021, six percent more than ten years ago.

In the economy as a whole, earnings increased by 23.8 percent over the same period.

Last year, the average gross monthly earnings in the postal, courier and express services sector was a good 1,000 euros below the average for the economy as a whole, which was 4,100 euros.

According to the authority, one reason for this is the comparatively small proportion of full-time employees in managerial positions (four percent) and prominent specialists (seven percent).

In the overall economy, their share was significantly higher last year at twelve percent or 24 percent of full-time employees.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, employees in the postal and parcel industry often work at unusual times, for example on weekends (60 percent) and at night between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. (14 percent).

The working conditions in the industry have repeatedly caused discussions - most recently during the corona pandemic.
