Marc Cercós designed his first website when he was barely 15 years old, in 2003. Two years later, without even reaching the age of majority, he founded his first company together with another partner.

His name was eyeOS, one of the first cloud storage and management systems on the market.

Now, seventeen years later, he claims to have created one of the most disruptive projects in the

software

world : MetaSoccer, a metaverse video game that allows you to earn money (and especially spend it) while training a soccer team.

The parent company is Champion Games, which appeared in 2015. It was founded by Cercós and Miguel Ángel Ruiz with the aim of developing Mister Fantasy, a game in which the participants form a virtual soccer team based on real players.

Later, two more partners joined the project: Álex Fiestas and Patxi Barrios.

"We grew very quickly, in a totally organic way, until we positioned ourselves as the second

fantasy

-that's what this type of game is called- in Spain", says Marc from the central offices in Barcelona, where all the employees physically meet one once a quarter.

In 2019 they raised a first round of 300,000 euros to expand it to Europe.

“It was then that we realized the congestion in this particular sector.

Entering foreign markets was unprofitable for us”.

A year later, at the beginning of 2020, they decided to start experimenting with

blockchain technology

.

To achieve this, they opened another investment process and managed to raise one million euros.

The objective?

Develop other games that combine leisure with cryptocurrency marketing.

"We decided to experiment in the

football management

category , which is where we had the most experience and what we had dedicated ourselves to until now."

They expanded their team from five to 13 people in less than a year, until MetaSoccer appeared in August 2021.

"It was a disruptive bet to create a real change in the video game industry," he defines.

Cercós did not even finish high school because, he says, "he was very clear about where he wanted to go."

Among its main investors are the funds Parafi Capital, DeFiance Capital or DAO Maker.

They have made players like Ronaldinho, Carvajal or Thomas Partey some of their ambassadors around the world.

In December 2021, after a round of 2.1 million euros, they made public the launch of their own

token

.

"We do not understand the metaverse as a place where augmented reality glasses are used and interact physically, but rather as a marketing place where economic profitability can be obtained."

In 2021 they invoiced 550,000 euros with 200,000 losses, according to the Mercantile Registry, but they plan to make the leap thanks to the launch of the

token

.

“Though the recent stagnation in the cryptocurrency market may end up lowering expectations a bit.”

They have 31 employees, most of whom work remotely spread between Spain and Portugal, and hope to reach 40 before the end of the year.

To play you do not need any knowledge about the

blockchain

or the cryptocurrencies themselves.

"MetaSoccer is designed so that the user doesn't even realize that they are actually working with this type of technology."

The minimum investment is 50 euros, with which you can start to make your own team made up of 11 players and, little by little, professionalize it.

They plan to fully incorporate official competitions, which will be the main monetization method for players.

"The goal is for a coach to be able to play in the First Division and manage a club with a fairly high monthly salary."

The response from the public, for now, is estimated at more than 7,000

holders

—as users are called— who have created a total of 60,000 footballers.

For now they are present in 90 countries, although their main market continues to be Latin America, with Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela among their three countries with the most users.
