The CLCV asks to postpone for two years the end of the regulated gas sales tariff for individuals, scheduled for June 30, by asserting its “protective nature” in a market that has become “toxic”.

The CLCV consumer association is asking to postpone the end of the regulated gas sales tariff for individuals by two years, scheduled for June 30, emphasizing its "

protective nature

" in a market that has become "

toxic

", in a letter to the President of the Republic made public on Tuesday.

From July 1, "

2.6 million households will have to give up the regulated gas tariff and subscribe to a market offer

" and "

the regulated tariff will of course cease to be the concrete reference for indexing many market offers

“, fears the consumer association, which wrote to Emmanuel Macron on December 7.

"

The crisis has highlighted a new quality of regulated sales tariffs, in electricity and gas, which is quite simply that of contractual security

", she argues.

“Such a toxic market”

The crisis has also illustrated the fact that "

a tariff can be radically modified at any time

", underlines the association in its letter to the president.

The association considers “

very risky to ask 2.6 million households to choose an offer in such a toxic market

”, according to a press release.

"

We are asking for the postponement of the end of the regulated tariff to weather the storm

", explains to AFP the general delegate of CLCV François Carlier, "

with the regulated tariff, you know that it will not increase by 40, 50 or even 60 %

”.

For gas as for electricity, there are several types of tariffs: regulated sales tariffs (TRV) are marketed by historical suppliers, EDF for electricity and Engie for gas.

At the same time, there are contracts indexed to this tariff, and market offers at free prices, variable or not.

According to the association, condominiums or HLM which, unlike households, do not have a regulated price, are already penalized: they do have a price shield in the form of aid which must be requested a posteriori but this does not absorb the price increase.

"

The energy suppliers pay the subsidy to the customer sometimes with a long and random delay in co-ownership

", underlines the association which also observes "

a scarcity of offers

" and "

very high prices

".

Even if the price of European natural gas returned at the start of the year to its lowest level since February 2022, there is nothing to ensure, according to the association, that this is a lasting trend.

The end of the regulated gas tariff stems from a 2017 decision by the Council of State deeming it to be contrary to European law.
