The CEO of the Asian social network meets with two vice presidents and a commissioner of the Community Executive

The European Commission is showing the teeth of its new digital standards to the executives of the large companies in the sector.

This Tuesday it was the turn of the CEO of the Chinese social network TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, to whom the vice president responsible for Justice and Rights, Vera Jourova, has demanded that "there is no doubt that the data of the users in Europe are safe and are not exposed to illegal access by the authorities of third countries.

The European Union approved two regulations last year, especially that of digital services (DSA,

Chew's agenda also included another vice president, Magrethe Vestager, responsible for Competition, and the Interior Commissioner, Ylva Johansson.

Data protection also had a prominent place in the meeting with Vestager, as she herself said at the end of the meeting, "with a reference to the recent information that appeared in the press about the aggressive collection and surveillance of data in the United States".

A few weeks ago it was learned that employees of this social network, which has more than a billion users worldwide (about 15 million in Spain), had spied on American journalists from

magazine , but who previously worked for

.

One of the elements that worries the European authorities is where the personal data of European users is stored.

When companies do so in the United States, this may mean that the authorities of that country access this sensitive information in the case of investigations by North American regulation.

The EU and the US have tried to solve this problem on two occasions with transatlantic agreements, but each time the Court of Justice of the EU has knocked them down for not being sufficiently guaranteeing.

Now the EU has a preliminary agreement with the Joe Biden Administration on general lines, but the detailed text has not yet been finalized.

In this legal context, both Vestager and Jourova have reminded Chew of the obligation to comply with the digital markets regulation (DMA) and the DSA, the latter even contemplating sanctions of up to 6% of the turnover of the company if its demands are not met.

“It is important that TikTok and other platforms quickly prepare to comply with the new EU digital regulations,” Jourova pointed out.

“I am counting on TikTok to fully implement its commitments to go the extra mile to respect EU law and win back the trust of European regulators.”

This Czech policy raised the tone less than a month ago on Twitter to remind the new owner of this last social network that it must comply with European rules, after the company that has a blue bird logo suspended the accounts of 10 American journalists in charge of cover Elon Musk.

“There are red lines.

And sanctions, soon, ”he warned then.

According to her final statement, Jourova has not only laid out demands at the meeting, she has also valued "positively that Tik Tok has joined the Code of Good Practice against disinformation and that it has quickly applied the EU sanctions against Russian propaganda media" .

“TikTok also recognizes that non-EU state actors attempt to manipulate content on the platform to spread disinformation and is working to address this issue,” she added.
